Is There Property Value In Owning A Pool?

Torn over the decision as to whether or not you should install a swimming pool on your property? Some homeowners, for instance, are concerned over the impact a pool addition may have to a home's resale value down the road. Fortunately, recent studies have shown that pools add a significant amount of resale value to a home. This, in addition to the luxury and relaxation that a backyard pool affords you on your own property, adds to the ever-growing list of reasons to install a swimming pool.

How Much Value Can a Pool Add?

One Secret Agent study found that a swimming pool could add between 10% and 16% to the total value of a house, or at least $140,000. This range varies due to the different impacts that a pool addition can have in various neighbourhoods. For example, in one suburb, pool ownership may be more desirable than in others where a community pool or similar amenities may already be available. Still, on average, you can expect your home value to increase by 10-16% with a standard pool installation. In this sense, despite the initial investment required to add a pool to your property, you can enjoy a great return on investment should you decide to list your home for sale down the road.

Why Buyers Want Homes With Pools

There are many reasons as to why a pool can be a major draw to prospective homebuyers. For starters, it's worth considering that people are beginning to spend more and more time in their own homes as a result of busier schedules across the board. As a result, people feel more of a need than ever to have their own sources of relaxation, entertainment, and recreation on their properties. A pool provides an excellent combination of all three of these needs, especially for young families.

Is There Property Value In Owning A Pool?

Even for families who live close to a local water source, such as a lake or beach, a swimming pool is a huge draw. This is because, especially with younger children, it can be a time-consuming hassle to pack and prepare for a day by the water. By having a pool on one's own property, it's easy to save time and avoid that hassle while still getting to spend time in the water. A personal pool also provides more privacy than any community pool or beach possibly could.
